Know Your Plumbing in Your Home

Most of us are guilty of not paying attention to our home’s plumbing when everything is working properly. However, having a basic understanding of your plumbing system will allow you to troubleshoot and potentially avoid damage (water damage) in an emergency.

Find some helpful plumbing tips below:

  • Locate and Turn Off Your Water Main (Stop Tap): If your plumbing system develops a leak, you will be grateful to know where your stop tap is in your home and how to stop the flow of water. We advise everyone who has moved into a new home (purchased or rented) to locate the stop tap (in case the worst happens).
  • Locate the individual cut-off valves (appliances). Check your water-using appliances, such as the dishwasher, washing machine and toilets, for the small handle that allows you to turn off the water supply. The washer handle is usually located behind the item, near the wall.
  • Become acquainted with the boiler. Locate your boiler’s shut-off valves for water, electricity and gas.
  • Unclogging a Washbasin (Natural Unblocking Solution): If your home sink is draining slowly and you have tried traditional drain cleaners without success, try a natural solution of 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup baking soda. Mix it and slowly pour it down the drain to see if that helps move it.
